The Church of Hérémence
Hérémence
An architectural masterpiece
As unusual as it is impressive, the church of Hérémence is a MUST-SEE not to be missed under any circumstances. Dedicated to St. Nicholas, it was built by the Basel architect Walter Förderer as a rock fallen in the middle of the village in which he said he would carve a church. The old church, having been weakened by the earthquake of 1946, had to be demolished and rebuilt.
Criticized at the time of its construction by outsiders, it is and has been the pride of the villagers since its first stone was laid in 1968, recognized as a building that will remain for posterity. It was built a few years after the titanic construction of the Grande Dixence. Built of concrete, it symbolizes a link with this epic dam project that has disrupted village life.
Its particular architecture with bold lines and curves makes it an atypical and unusual curiosity to visit imperatively. Do not be intimidated by this imposing mass of concrete, push the door and let yourself be carried away by this extraordinary place. Inside, a free "Sound and Light" presentation introduces you to the peculiarities of this place. We love it a little, a lot, passionately...One thing is for sure, this building will not leave you indifferent.
