The Alpine pastures of Hérémence

Hérémence

Before the construction of the Grande Dixence dam in the 1960s, the commune of Hérémence had a dozen of alpine pastures, several of which are still in operation. Life in the mountain pastures continues today, carrying on the alpine tradition of our ancestors.

What is an alpine pasture? It is a vast territory at a high altitude where the beautiful Hérens cows (and others) go to graze all summer, like a happy holiday camp. Some mountain pastures have now become agro-tourism sites, reinventing themselves in a new way and giving a different soul to our former mountain pastures.

ALPAGE OF MANDELON

This mountain pasture has been inhabited since ancient times and has kept its alpine character with its cheese making and its herd of Hérens cows. Every year, a herd of about a hundred Hérens cows settle in during summer, along with the alpine bar. Easily accessible by a beautiful asphalt road, it is also a place to stay for nature and local lovers. The old pig stables have been converted into an alpine gite.

ALPAGE OF ESSERTZE

At the beginning of August, it is the transhumance to the pastures of Essertze after having grazed for nearly 50 days in Mandelon. Near the mountain pasture, the Essertze hut welcomes hikers and visitors to the Gouilles d'Essertze, a protected natural site with remarkable wild beauty and 7 small lakes.

ALPAGE D’ORCHERA

A mountain pasture on the Thyon-Dixence trail that is the home of a herd of dairy cows.

ALPAGE DE NOVELLI ET DE MÉRIBÉ

2 alpine pastures near Grande Dixence that can be crossed during a beautiful circular walk from Pralong.
