Portrait-interview of Mélanie Meillard
Let's get to know each other
My name is Mélanie Meillard, I'm 24 and I'm originally from Neuchâtel, but I moved to Hérémence with my family when I was 10.
What inspires you about Hérémence and the Val d'Hérens in general?
It's a beautiful valley in a sublime, peaceful setting, with superb authentic villages and great ski slopes.
Do you have a secret corner to share?
I don't have a secret spot, but I do like the Cabane d'Essertze and the Gouilles above it. It's a quiet spot with a magnificent view over the valley. And of course I love the ski slopes in winter ;).
What's your favourite season? What's your favourite season?
I love all the seasons, but especially winter! I love it when the mountains are white and you can put your skis on ;-)
Can you tell us a bit about your discipline, your activity?
I'm a professional skier, competing in the World Cup in the slalom and giant slalom disciplines. I travel a lot around the world to train and take part in ski races.
What are your best memories of skiing in Hérémence?
I don't have one ‘best memory’, but many ;-). When I was little, I loved the ski club competitions because there was always a good atmosphere ;-). I also have fond memories of every day spent on the slopes ‘back home’.
What would be your top 3 suggestions for things to see and do in the region?
The Essertze hut with its Gouilles and the Grande Dixence dam.
What advice would you give to a visitor to the region?
Enjoy the scenery!
How would you like to see your village and the valley in 20 years or more?
To continue to retain its authenticity while keeping up to date with new and innovative activities.
Any last words?
Welcome to my beautiful valley!
