Mountain pastures in winter

You’re no doubt familiar with the mountain pasture of Mandelon in summer and its alpine atmosphere punctuated by the sound of Eringer cow bells!
And in winter?

It’s an altogether different feel! Winter at altitude has a truly magical, unexpected feel to it. If
you’re yet to experience the mountains in winter, opt for adventure.
Discovering mountain pastures in winter is more than a magical experience: it’s virtually out-of-this-world. The landscape varies greatly from summer to winter. A whole different picture. Even those who are perfectly familiar with their surroundings can have trouble working out where they are.

From Mandelon, head along the groomed road by foot, or with snowshoes depending on the conditions, and follow the safe, marked route which leaves from Leteygeon. The snowshoe trail winds its way through alpine huts and forests, with views over the hamlets opposite, sitting under the mountain ridge. It often intersects the road to the mountain pasture. After crossing through a thick forest, you come hurtling into a huge snowy clearing from where alpine shelters can be made out. The walls of the Grand Dixence Dam can be spotted from here.
After a 3-hour climb in total tranquillity, a rich reward awaits: the mountain pasture of Mandelon offers fantastic views over snow-capped peaks. The sun-burnt wood of the chalets contrasts with the bright white winter snow. Some winters, the covering of snow is so thick that the small mountain shelters appear to crumble under the weight it.

We all know the age-old saying, “after effort comes comfort”. Each weekend, when the weather’s fine, Alexandre and his team head up to the mountains and throw the doors open of the bar. Sitting on a terrace at 2,066 metres altitude bathed in sunshine as you share a fondue with friends is all the happiness you need. The rewards are worth the climb. The bar and gites are open from noon on Friday to Sunday afternoon (except in bad weather)! Perfect for fans of unusual evenings and unique accommodation. Keep up-to-date by following the bar’s facebook page.

Tip: attach your skibob to your backpack and treat yourself to a sled trip down the groomed road, weather depending. But keep it quiet!
Fan of unique accommodation? Don’t miss the ‘Racquette et Raclette’ package!
