Portrait-interview with Bastien Dayer
Let's get to know each other
Bastien Dayer is a native and resident of the village of Hérémence. He is married and the father of Anna and Yann.
What inspires you about Hérémence and the Val d'Hérens in general?
For me, Hérémence is synonymous with nature, tradition and escapism, and the Val d'Hérens is full of authentic places.
Do you have a secret corner to share?
A secret is no longer a secret when it's shared... But there are plenty of magical places that have recently become popular, such as the Lac Bleu above Arolla.
What's your favourite season? What's your favourite season?
Without a doubt, winter is the rhythm of my life! But December is particularly impressive because the mountains put on their white mantle and the freshly-covered terrain makes for a breathtaking play of light.
Tell us a bit about your discipline, your activity?
I've been competing in the Telemark World Cup since the 2004/05 season. The motto of this discipline is ‘free heel, free spirit’. It stands out for its elegance on the snow and its authentic microcosm. I invite you to take a look at some images of our skiing.
What are your best memories of skiing in Hérémence?
Having races at home is always an emotional commitment. When success is achieved, the memories are engraved forever.
What would be your top 3 suggestions for things to see and do in the region?
Go to the Val des Dix with its glaciers, its particular hydrology and its impressive dam.
Listen to the bellowing of the stag. Discover the old village of Hérémence and its inhabitants through its various special features such as the church, the mill, the wine press, the forge, the museum, etc.
What advice would you give to a visitor to the region?
Switch off your phone and take the time to live in harmony with nature.
How would you like to see your village and the valley in 20 years or more?
First of all, I hope that in 20 years' time we will have changed the way we consume. I firmly believe that the various local and regional players should work together to develop fun experiences that incorporate the codes of the mountains. The world will be hyper-connected, and for me it's important that we diversify wisely and attract a different type of clientele looking for calm and authenticity.
Any last words?
Hérémence has always been a source of innovation. Its geographical location is well worth a visit, but for me it's its people, through their dynamism and commitment, that are the source of inspiration.
